A Henderson tofu maker has become the first Auckland employer to sign up to the living wage campaign, promising to pay its six factory workers at least $18.40 an hour within a year. What's the non-disclosure? Jesse Chalmers is a left-wing activist and Green Party member. She stood for the left wing City Vision ticket at the last Auckland local body elections, and was elected to the Waitemata Local Board.
Tonzu, a family-owned company, has a current starting wage of $15 an hour and says it would cost $600 a week to lift everyone to $18.40 - a pay rise averaging $100 a week for workers such as 31-year-old mother-of-four Meaalofa Meke.
But brother-and-sister directors Dan and Jesse Chalmers, who took over the business from their parents Lippy and Ricky, believe they will be able to find the money within a year by cutting wastage and other costs.
In the meantime, Lippy Chalmers joined a delegation that asked Auckland Mayor Len Brown to adopt the living wage for his council, and Jesse Chalmers said Tonzu had been working towards lifting wages to two-thirds of the average wage anyway.
So essentially, this is a pitch by a local board member to her own council in the guise of a responsible business owner caring for her employees.
Dick Hubbard would be proud.

So they're not doing it?
Stick to torturing yourself on long walks. You're no good at this.
I wonder who is setting a reminder for 1 years' time to see if they kept their promise (or went out of business)?
So Judge ... in your lexicon non- disclosure isn't an issue.
and with campaign funds?
They never hid who they were. Important thing is they're leading the way. I know tories don't respect people who walk the walk, but that says more about you than the Chalmers.
Judge ... I respect even less people who talk the talk ...
you know the type, chardonnay socialists, wedded to the mantra of hand-outs rather than hand-ups.
You probably see one each time you shave (assuming you have reached that age).
Right, yet here's a private company doing the right thing by its workers and all you can manage is a sneer. Ever wonder why normal people think tories are arseholes?
So what are "normal people" and where do we have to go to find them. I thought I was a normal person.
And they haven't done the right thing - all they've done is said they might do it in 12 months time.
Like that really holds water...
Hardly surprising you're not acquainted with normality, Chuck. Found Obama's real birth certificate yet? Impeach the gay Mooooslim!
Judge - good on them for paying the $18.40. The real question is this - can the business stand it or will they be in receivership/liqidation in a years time?
They will need a big lift in productivity in order to survive and tht may not be within their capabilities.
As far as disclosure is concerned - if you put yourself forward in such a manner you have a moral obligation to disclose your political nd other ffiliations.
"if you put yourself forward in such a manner you have a moral obligation to disclose your political nd (sic) other ffiliations (sic)."
Why? They didn't try to hide who they were. The key thing is they're doing it. It's a typical tory tactic to try and impugn motives and destroy individuals who show them up. The Key administration does this weekly.
