MILITARY COOPERATION WITH THE RFMF

The Government is to be applauded for its decision to restore military ties with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.   Those ties were rightly broken by Prime Minister Helen Clark  back in 2006 at the time of the third coup which saw the military head, Frank Bainimarama, installed as Prime Mister over the ousted Laisenia Qarase.

The situation changed with Fiji's return to a parliamentary democracy following the September 2014 election which saw Bainimarama's Fiji First Party win with close on 60% of the vote against a turnout of 84%.   The elections were generally considered to have been free and fair.

New Zealand has a long history of military involvement with Fiji stretching back to 1941 and maintained a substantial presence in that country with 5 Sqn RNZAF operating Short Sunderland MR5 aircraft based at  Lauthala Bay through until 1968.   1 Battalion, Fiji Infantry Regiment, which served in Malaya from 1952 through until 1956 during the 'Emergency', contained a number of New Zealand officers and, as late as 1967, during my first tour to Malaysia we had a Fijian officer attached to our battalion.   Fijian officers (and other ranks) regularly trained in New Zealand and indeed, one of my fellow students on the Grade 2 Staff and Tactics (Staff College selection) course was Sitiveni Rabuka best known as the driving force behind the two military coups that shook Fiji in 1987.   Up until the early 1980s the RFMF was commanded by a succession of New Zealand officers the last one being Colonel (later Brigadier) Ian Thorpe.

In the 1970s and 1980s the RFMF was a formidable force, so much so that at the time of the 1987 coup and with Prime Minister David Lange pushing for the NZ military to be send in to help restore order, the advice tendered to him was that there was a good chance they would be be defeated by an army fighting in defence of their homeland.     In later years my assessment is that their capability has been downgraded.   They have been heavily involved in UN operations which has proved to be a valuable source of income for the Government.   However the tempo of those operations has revealed a number of deficiencies and failures.

As I said at the beginning, the decision of our Government to restore military ties with Fiji is to be welcomed.if for no other reason as a counter to the growing Chinese military involvement in the region.

RUSSELL NORMAN TO RESIGN

It is being reported that Russell Norman is about to announce his resignation as co-leader of the Greens.

Gueez, for all his faults (and there are many) he stands head and shoulders over the Gucci sheila.

Seems like changing leaders is in vogue for the opposition parties; yesterday Cunliffe, today Norman, tomorrow Peters?

update .... confirmed.   He will however stay on as a List MP ... funny that!

Science progresses one funeral at a time

The social sciences too, apparently. If, like me, you're male and of a certain age, you'll have spent a reasonable amount of time listening to idiots tell you what to eat (or not eat).  Being a type-1 diabetic, I've been hearing it since my 20s so have a lot more experience of it than most my age, along with direct personal experience of why those involved really are complete fucking morons (if you have to manually administer your insulin yourself, your own flesh quickly reveals which dietary advice is completely fucked).  The people spinning you these food yarns like to make a pretence of being scientists, but they're actually social scientists, which is not a compliment. However, one thing the social sciences apparently have in common with actual science is the old science adage "Science progresses one funeral at a time."

Two current exemplars are Professor Rod Jackson and Professor Jim Mann, who are staunch defenders of the social science they learned back in the 70s and no doubt will be until they die and are replaced by professors of more recent vintage.

The January 24-30 Listener (paywalled, sorry: http://www.listener.co.nz/current-affairs/health-current-affairs/the-dodgy-dozen/) has an article called "For Better or Worse" in which the two Profs illustrate just why bad social science is so, so bad.  The premise is this: for more than 40 years, people like Jackson and Mann ("experts," apparently) have been telling us to eat a low-fat, high carb diet.  During that period, incidences of obesity and type-2 diabetes have skyrocketed.  Could Jackson, Mann et al perhaps not be giving us the best possible advice?

They don't think so.  Jackson (if you're an enthusiast for completely deranged news stories, you may recall him as the bloke who wanted butter banned as a poison):

"If you look at the major lifestyle diseases, which are cardiovascular disease, coronary disease and stroke, they're skyrocketing down.  And have been since 1967."

Knowing that progress in the social sciences is effectively a compilation of correlation=causation errors and confirmation bias, Jackson can see that this decline in heart disease is definitely down to his dietary guidelines (unlike the increases in obesity and type-2 diabetes, which are totes nothing to do with his dietary advice and instead presumably because fatties scoff too many calories).

Those of us without a lifetime's expertise in epidemiology are of course tempted to look at it another, no doubt amateurish way.  The only thing that's been conclusively demonstrated to cause heart disease is smoking - so, was there anything happened around the mid-1960s involving smoking?  Well, there's the US Surgeon-General's report of 1964 declaring smoking seriously bad for your health, and there's the fact that since then, the proportion of smokers in the NZ population has declined from somewhere around 60% to somewhere around 20%.  I guess that, being a mere schmuck without the above-mentioned professorial expertise in epidemiology, I just wouldn't have the intellectual horsepower to figure out why the decline in heart disease isn't down to the reduction in smoking but is actually due to the incredibly useful dietary advice offered by Prof Jackson, but then, that's why Prof Jackson gets paid a fat salary by University of Auckland and I'm just some schmuck.

Professor Mann peddles the same line.  I have to declare a conflict of interest here, in that I've held Prof Mann in utter contempt since, as an advisor to the sugar industry, he agreed to its claim that people get fat because they eat fat, not because they eat lots of sugar. If the prof doesn't know what insulin is and what it does, he should turn in his prof job and take up employment better suited to his abilities, like cleaning toilets or something.  And if he does know, then he's basically a charlatan.  Here's the prof in full bullshit effect:

"In New Zealand, the reduction in fat consumption from more than 40% towards 30% - and saturated fat towards 10% - since the 1970s has been associated with a reduction in coronary heart disease death rates by more than two thirds."

Because it just couldn't be the reduction in smoking, right?  Because, if it was the reduction in smoking causing the decline in death rates, that would mean... well, fuck, not only would it mean Profs Mann and Jackson are hangovers from the 1970s who really need to retire or die so that the social science can move forward, it would mean that they'd die with hundreds of thousands of morbidly obese type-2 diabetics on their conscience.  That can't possibly be the case - can it?

ON BLOGGERS AND COMMENTATORS AND THINGS

My fellow bloggers on 'No Minister' are clearly an eclectic lot.    Not sure what drives them but, for this blogger, it's the chance to post on the things that interest me .... defence matters,  issues that effect the veteran community, history, contemporary politics, aviation, rugby, golf (won't mention my net 62 of two weeks ago) and cricket.    At times I will try and be provocative in order to generate responses from both the left and right of the political spectrum.   It amuses me how vicious some of those responses can be.   It is a truism that the extreme left and the extreme right of the politics are joined at the hip when it comes to nasty invective.

Edward the Confessor and Redbaiter are examples of what I am talking about.   Both have attacked me over the years.   EtC would have you believe I am the High Tory personified who eats babies for breakfast while Red has me leading the charge to introduce socialism by stealth.   Most of my acquaintances would describe me as mild center-right although I have to admit that 30 something years ago, while attending the RNZAF Command and Staff College, I wrote a thesis in a frolic of fancy advocating a form of proportional representation for the NZ Parliament which was treated with some amusement by the Directing Staff ... from their reaction it was about twenty years ahead of its time.

And I laugh at EtC's view of me.   My paternal side of the family (including my father) were all staunch socialists.   Certainly I can remember visiting my aunt in Palmerston North with the obligatory portrait of MJS in an honoured place on the living room wall.   Dad tramped the streets for Labour in the 1950s and 1960s (probably to his cost in rural NZL).   Mum was closet National.   A family joke relayed by my sister has Dad demanding of Mum after exiting the polling booth each election 'you voted the right way didn't you' and Mum replying 'of course I did'.    But one thing I do know ....  Dad would be very uncomfortable with the Labour Party of today.

We were an average New Zealand family.   We lived in a State House per courtesy of Peter Frazer which my parents bought per courtesy of a National government.    There were certainly no 'silver spoons' for either myself or my sister but both of us have been moderately successful by dint of hard work.   And that has fashioned my political allegiance.   The role of government is to encourage success.    The dumbing down to the lowest common denominator is a recipe for failure.   Cut through the rhetoric and that's what the left side of politics is all about when push comes to shove.

Red of course would have that government should limit itself to the defence of the realm and nothing too much more.   I reject that completely.   The State has a role in the delivery of public services (but not an exclusive role).   Equally, the State has a role in providing a safety net for those in genuine need (but that doesn't extend to lifestyle dependency).    His view of society would, if implemented, lead to rioting on the streets and in that situation I for one would happily help man the barricades.    It will never come to that.   The voting public is far too sophisticated for that to happen.

One further thing.   I accept the 80/20 rule in politics.   Purists from either side of the political spectrum find that challenging.   Case in point.   I would have preferred that National voted against the anti-smacking legislation.   Labour had the numbers to pass it and John  Key, recognizing that, negotiated changes to the Bill (upholding the right to 'light' smacking) in return for his support.   In doing so he snookered himself and made it politically difficult for him to later repudiate the legislation.   Had he not given Labour his support then National might have been able to repeal the Bill, subject of course to receiving support for its coalition partners (no means certain).   As I said, I would have preferred the latter course of action but there was no way I was going to throw my toys out of the bathwater over that.

So there it is pure and simple.   Fully expect a sneering response from the likes of EtC and/or Redbaiter but that will be water off a ducks back.    I have been hacked at by far better persons than they will ever be.    I will continue to blog for as long as I feel I have something to contribute and then, in the words of the old barrack room ditty, I will just fade way .... long time coming I suspect having not yet reached three score years and ten (although that won't prevent EtC from continuing to refer to me, and others, as 'old' ... funny that too, most decent people I know reject ageism as something to be abhorred).

Compare And Contrast

Two speeches which tell you all you need to know about the two parties.

John Key focuses on a very specific problem, housing stock, and offers a very specific solution.

Andrew Little focuses on unemployment and offers no solution. (In fact unemployment currently is already at a record low.)  Then he burbles about some nebulous meaningless concept called 'inequality.'  What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Who the hell is advising Little?  A mole from the National Party?

Ingratitude In Spades

Most New Zealanders accorded Eleanor Catton the recognition due for her undoubted success in the world of literature when she won the Booker Prize.

Currently on a junket to India this adorable ingrate has indulged her Green Party credentials and given a swift one to our collective groin with a rather injudicious outburst;

"she is uncomfortable being seen as an ambassador for New Zealand which she says is dominated by neo-liberal, profit-obsessed, shallow and money hungry politicians who do not care about culture."

I wonder if the little jumped up arrogant replica of a female dog has any understanding of what this country has donated to her over the years of her indulgent occupation of our oxygen supplies?

As with so many suddenly elevated by talent or luck to the main stage she suddenly feels an urge to fling muck at others who provided her with her chance of fame but she regards with an undoubted disdain as if we have collectively trod in her excrement.

From The Jaws of Victory

I never thought he could be so stupid.

Aussie PM Tony Abbott, that is.

Yesterday he lost the next federal election by awarded the goofy greenie vegan Prince Charles a knighthood.

Amazingly, he did not consult cabinet on this appallingly damaging decision.

ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT - DEATH BY SHOOTING

New Zealand ended capital punishment for murder in 1961 and abolished it altogether in 1989.    For the record I am opposed to capital punishment but I accept the right of individual countries to make their own determination.

Indonesia retains the death penalty and in that jurisdiction (and others) the execution is carried out by shooting.   It is not my intention to discuss the rights and wrongs of that but instead to focus on the practice of having one or more members of the firing squad issued with a bank round.    Indeed, as I understand it in Indonesia, nine out of the twelve members of the firing party are issued with blanks.

For the life of me (bad choice of words) I fail completely to understand the rationale for this.   The theory is to provide a level of comfort to members of the firing squad that they might not have necessarily fired the fatal shot ... what tosh.    Anyone with any experience of firearms will know the huge difference in recoil between firing a weapon loaded with ball ammunition and one loaded with a blank.   It is nothing more than a PR sop that serves no useful purpose.    Indeed, I would argue that in the Indonesian case having only three members firing live bullets and you are increasing the likelihood of serious wounding rather than instant death.   That is to be deplored.

As I said, I am opposed to capital punishment but if it is to be carried out then forget the canard of the 'blank round' and get it over with quickly and with no room for error.

WAIHOPAI 'SPY' BASE

I see that the annual pilgrimage of the disaffected and the disarranged to protest about the Government Communications & Security Bureau (GCSB) communications facility at Waihopai took place at Blenheim over the weekend led by John Minto of the Mana Party and the Greens Stefan Browning.

Clearly the ritual call of the bases closure failed to resonate with 'normal' New Zealanders with only 50 or so of their rag-tag supporters bothering to turn up against a mounting backdrop of the need for the government to monitor the activities of those whose loyalty is to to ISIS and Islamic terriorism..

Methinks Minto is living in crimdotcon dreamland when he opines “I think it’s inevitable that it’s going to close, and it’s going to close because there is mounting public concern about surveillance.”

Note to Mr Minto ... when your protest struggles to excite the mainstream media I suspect you are really pushing shit up hill.

No mind.   Next week it's back to work for you as a teacher at Hillary College where you can continue to pervert the minds of young New Zealanders and turn them into failures just like you.

METIRIA LEANNE AGNES TUREI - DISSECTED

Just why National bothers turning up at Ratana Pa year after year has me somewhat stumped.   Makes about as much sense butting in on May Day celebrations organised by the CTU.    No criticism of the religion intended but the reality is that the Ratana Church is a minority religion among Maoridom with strong links to the Labour Party.   It does not speak for Maoridom.

So yesterday New Zealand was 'treated' to a speech by Metiria Turei prepared for (but not delivered because of time constraints?) delivery at Ratana Pa as part of the annual pilgrimage by politicians or all shapes and colours to acknowledge the Church and its founder TW Ratana.

In the speech she launched a 'stinging attack' on John Key for his "warped, outrageous and deeply offensive" views on New Zealand history and characterised the PM as a prime example of "ignorant, uneducated Pakeha" ... this notwithstanding that the Green Party has as one of its stated values "to engage respectfully without personal attacks".   So much for Green Party values.

So just who is Meteria Turei, co-leader of the Greens.    Well, one thing we know is that she can be characterised as a 'political prostitute' having stood for the McGillicuddy Serious Party in thje 1993 election and the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party in 1996 (this could explain at lot) before gravitating to the Greens in time to be elected as a List MP at the 2002 election.

So what have been her achievements to date?   Well, apart from the quite incongruous situation where she pontificates against social injustice while wearing $2,000 Adrienne Winklemann designer jackets (surely the ultimate Chardonnay Socialist) nothing much at all.   In 2006 her 'Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill' was drawn from the ballot but was defeated 84-34 while later that year her 'Liquor Advertising Bill' was also drawn and defeated.    In 2009 her 'Marine Animals Protection Law Reform Bill was drawn from the ballot but defeated at its first reading and later that year her Crown Minerals Amendment Bill, also drawn in the ballot, went nowhere.

In 2009 Turei was elected co-leader of the Greens defeating Sue Bradford who, by then, had been successful with three Private Member's Bills.   Not sure why, being Maori would have helped (bi-sexual and homosexual/lesbian and she would have scootered in for both positions such is the way the Greens work; but I digress).    Perhaps Bradford was seen as too radical but at least she remained true to herself as evidenced in her dalliance with the Mana Party and its association with crimdotcon.

Metiria Leanne Agnes Turei is the ugly face of the Greens.   Should they ever succeed in going into coalition with Labour it will be in spite of her rather than because of her.

p.s.    for EtC.    Don't worry about the latest Roy Morgan Poll results (even though it is seen as favouring Labour).    It was certainly a rogue result.   Labour can't have possibly dropped under the leadership of their fourth new face in as many years.   Oh yeah of 'Little' hope.

Noticed

Just before 11.00am today I was in central Hastings and noticed a mongrel mob member sitting in his car in the first car park on the left from the railway crossing (town clock) in Heretaunga Street East. The meter was expired. At the same time as I saw him a Parking Warden came into view and walked past this car completely ignoring it and the expired meter - obviusly he preferred easier targets.

RMA, tinkering probably, fixed Nah

Under pressure from the seemingly inexorable creep in house prices, particularly in the country's biggest metropolis, The National Government has, via its "Bluegreen" Token, promulgated a revamp of an Act that has as many detrimental facets as beneficial ones.

In my always humble opinion there is a massive problem that continually arises in the well intentioned bit of the socialist created manipulative roadblock to much of the entrepreneurial spirit that has largely built this nation.

Endless and expensive legal wrangling that often turns on capricious and mindless interference with minimal involvement of environmental or socially damaging effects on those with skin in the immediate game.
All too often this bit of legislation is used for commercial, political, or personal advantage and I have never any seen such arrant nonsense challenged by those charged with the administration of the Act apart from a few totally ignored submissions of the advocates for the helpless trying to progress their lives on land they consider they have pretty exclusive historical rights to.

A supermarket already in place uses the Act to prevent a competitor establishing in the vicinity as happened in the North Shore in a drawn out legal process
A land owner wishing to build a new dwelling on his farm ending up thwarted by people living many miles away and in all probability never going anywhere even close to the isolated place intended to be built on.

The media parade a seemingly endless list of hearings that all too often are instigated and delivered pro bono by politically motivated dogma driven acolytes in pursuit of a manifesto as much about political advancement as any concern with the lofty ideals that accompanied the introduction of Palmer's auxiliary handbrake.

As the Act has become embedded, its large pile of bureaucratic palaver created by Councillors and bureaucrats with minimal or zero grasp of how the real world works within the commercial constraints and apparently have no concerns for the additional costs that are inevitably incurred as it is never "Their" money being used to fund the process. It comes from that arms length endless source,  the poor ratepayers and property owners also paying through their rates to confront them.

In all probability, all hapless Nick Smith will achieve, will turn out to be just further opportunity for the legal vultures sitting on the nearby fence, erected without the intervention of the RMA,  awaiting the next opportunity to make hay whether the sun shines or doesn't.

Another Incompetent Herald Waste of Space

Serial bullshitter Gareth Morgan claims Pakeha 'nearly exterminated' Maori.'  Apparently he was visiting the Ratana church when he proclaimed this latest revisionist myth.

His knowledge of history is akin to his performance as an investment manager.  Nonexistant.

Mr Morgan, before the treaty was signed, Maori themselves killed off 30,000 of their own population by way of using muskets against taieha and patu.   This represented 30% of a population at the time of 100,000.

That's why some Maori chiefs were so keen to sign the treaty.  They wanted the Pakeha to protect them from those murderous bastards up North.  Harawira's lot.

Does It Matter ?

The rich are getting richer, so what.

The poor are getting richer as well, good.

The only poverty, is of spirit, aspiration and success, certainly.

After the first gazillion what does it matter how much more the 1% have than the mean , zero, a great big fat one.

Will the uber rich be captured by envy taxes, nope.

Who then, will be dispossessed by envy taxes, simply all those making their way down struggle street and getting fleeced by the "crats" at every  turn;
GST, Rates (including more GST), rubbish charges, water charges, Vehicle regos, ACC levies, Income tax, Parking Fees and fines, Road Tolls, Consent fees, fishing licences, Fuel  taxes, Road User charges, airport departure taxes, etc.

And it has been that way since, forever.

Gee Whiz That Is A Relief!!!

Its alright the poor wee baby cooked to death in a car outside Wanganui Hospital was a victim of a syndrome.

Quite how a parent "forgets" about their child is way beyond my understanding.

Had it happened in the Casino car park while the step father was playing the pokies, would he have been accorded similar understanding by those nice theory driven academic types for "FORGETTING"  the helpless little mite.

A Quote Of The Day

Thomas Bauer born in Hungary and a doubting ' Thomas' on the value of Foreign Aid as a means of improving the lot of impoverished millions. He moved to Great Britain and ended up professor of economics at the LSE. He must have been a voice in the wilderness there.

"Foreign aid is where the poor people in rich countries give money to rich people in poor countries"

Bauer proposed that development was a centuries traversing growth that was severely challenged when well intentioned politicians handed cash to leaders of tin pot little fiefdoms with no history of fairness and democracy, whose first aim was self enrichment and then used the financial donations as a  means for those now wealthy leaders to preserve their power and domination of the poor who ended up worse off for the experience.

Death of The Media

Australia's ABC has long been a nest of socialist vipers, with all it's prime time political and current affairs programmes hosted by lefties.  Last year tax payers gave it $1.2bil and in return the ABC  mounted the most egregious campaign to damage Australia's relationship with Indonesia in an attempt to thwart the Abbot gummint's efforts to turn back the boatloads of illegal immigrants flooding in from that country.

Today, Adolf sees the ABC has got its comeuppance.

The viewers are deserting it in droves.

Welcome to the club ABC.  APN, Fairfax, NYT can all tell you what happens when you alienate half of your potential customers.

"The main commercial networks managed to hold on to their audiences despite introducing programming cost cuts greater than the efficiency cuts of the government. The government has not demanded programming cuts at the ABC."

Hesson has made a difference.

When Mike Hesson was appointed as the coach of the New Zealand cricket team in July 2012 and almost all cricket fans and many players said Mike Who.

Well at present this 40 something who was faced with possible peak times as a player in the Otago B team turned to coaching at a young age, is forging a 'one of the best' reputations as a coach.
A living example that All Blacks do not always make successful coaches he is at the top of his game  30 months on.

One of his first headlines was created when he removed icon Ross Taylor from the short form teams captaincy offering him the face saving job to continue to lead the Test team.
Never easy to dump one as 'big' as Rosco and a hurt Taylor decided to take a break from the game and reassess his options.
Hesson wanted a man he knew well Brendon McCallum, who with a record somewhat up and down  to lead the Pyjama teams.

Yesterday another demonstration that the man almost nobody knew, delivered again with a victory over current World Cup Champions, Sri Lanka.

At 180 for three SL were on track for a score in excess of three hundred but instead of the past concession meme the NZ bowlers took it to all out in the 50th over at 276, still runs on the board.
When the NZ innings was teetering at 68 for three in 16 overs how many said here we go again.
Mike Hesson has this well set bunch in a good space and they kept fighting and with three overs to go it was still SL's game to lose and that was what happened.
Luke Ronchi wicket keeper batsman at seven grabbed the game in the 47 over with;
4.6.2.0.6.6.
leaving veteran Vettori to score the one run with a carving drive for four from the first ball of the 48th.

The world cup will be different with games sudden death and vagaries of  weather, toss, injuries and sheer bad luck but suggestions that the NZ team can do well are no longer fanciful and Mike Hesson's team that includes Ross Taylor but no 'i',  are a chance.
Who would have thought that three years ago.

Nothing New But Despicable Always

Detective Sergeant Ross Tarawhiti describes it "as a troubling trend".

It is just one opportunity the scum use.

I drew the short straw in 1962 and stood guard over a rural house while a mate married the daughter at a local church before returning to the farm homestead for the reception.

What Tarawhiti was alluding to is an outbreak of lowlifes burgling homes while the grieving family are attending the last farewell of a loved one in Christchurch.

His suggestion is to omit addresses from death notices, gee serge that will work a treat, they might be low life scum but it is entirely possible one of them has the ability to use the freakin phone book or electoral rolls to do the match.
Perhaps a plod sitting in a car at the gate might be a better option for the couple of hours involved working the laptop and smart phone on the admin tasks we hear so much about.

Of course that has the risk of the burgs suggesting they take the tv and computor while the plainclothes checks out the bedroom for the jewels and cash.

Cripes Ross how many funerals are there on any given day before you strike paydirt, but then it will only be a minor hiccup to the scurrilous opportunist anti social victimisation of the grieving.
The dead one is finished with whatever is removed eh.

These Crazed Morons Really Are Depraved.

I am not anti any religion, I seriously question a lot of the dogma though.
There is a salutary long list of killing, maiming, subjugation and outright slaughter in the name of religion over the centuries

Currently while almost all other religions have accepted learning and cultural growth shows a better way than killing to get the message of hope and salvation out there for the betterment of all, Islam stands condemned. It is locked in stoneage beliefs.

Islam, it has changed little since a power hungry mad bastard living in the desert found the way to consolidate his power and dominion by employing extreme violence and 1400 years on it is little changed.
Oh it has exchanged camels for four wheel drive utes, Elephants for Tanks left by an  successive inept USA presidents, scimitars for Kalashnikov automatic rifles but culturally and intellectually the followers of The Prophet Muhammad and successive mad Mullahs using totalitarian systems have languished in the depths of depravity begun in the desert all those centuries ago.

In the centuries before the advent of Islam, Persia and the fertile lands of the Euphrates river valley were a cradle of civilisation and in the 1400 years after the bloody uniting of disparate Arab  tribes by the original mad mullah, stagnation, slaughter, mutilation and maiming is the only game in town.

Christendom has a history of supreme mayhem with dissenters and those considered to have deviated from the teachings of the church suffering horrific death and mutilation  using fire, water, and various bits of equipment but thankfully education overcame the dogma and today the biggy punishments are admonishment and or excommunication.

Not so lucky for those who have come under the power of ISIS in Syria and Iraq and those living under the Saudi sponsors of their murderous regime
There are sickening images on the internet of various punishments on charges that would in a modern Christian or secular state be regarded as not even worthy of any punishment.
Two young men accused of homosexual activity were pushed of the highest building in Mosul to die on the pavement four stories down.
Two other young men facing unknown charges paraded through a town lashed to two adjoining steel crosses are then removed from the truck and shot in the head from behind.
A third series of photos in the montage I viewed has a niquab clad woman stoned to death  no charges published.

Then I read of the appalling and very sad slaughter of 13 young men and that prompted this further post on what we will in all likely hood never be told us by our lamestream media.
Their crime in the perverted view of the power crazed leadership of ISIL, watching a tv showing the Asia cup football  game between Iraq and Jordan.
For such a serious crime they were herded before a firing squad and died in a hail of automatic fire.

This is all done in the name of Islam the so called religion of peace that almost all western leaders and almost all media outlets refuse to name as responsible for the ongoing atrocities.

No apologies for posting and no links, they are beyond my sense of decency but it must be told because until the millions of followers of Islam can break the power of the mad mullahs who use idealistic and depraved simpletons to promote their orgy of slaughter in the name of a prophet who still is regarded by the faithful as the only way, the desert cult will continue its murderous way.

The revolution will come but it will be tenuous for some time yet.
One early step is given exposure by The Whale who posts on an Egyption Obstetrician/Gynecologist who converted to Christianity a decade ago and now is leading the way with questions as to what will it take before the world accepts that Islam must change.
However Mark Christian's life will be in serious danger as the mad bastards know they have to kill, threaten and do whatever it takes to prevent such radical thought taking hold among the undoubted peace believing millions whose silent acceptance of the extreme murderous intent of the leadership and their few radicalised  cohorts who have traded their brains for the nefarious promise of 72 virgins, clearly basic maths is not high up in their CVs, leaves the sect condemned in the eyes of a majority of thinking people.
For now.

Lifesaver!

Chris Petrie of Noosa prosecuted for driving his esky at around 25kph on the pavement while intoxicated.

Esky

At least those cops are making things safe for their citizenry, unlike our misdirected, ill-advised, pathetic, avaricious ineffective constabulary who spent the holiday period ticketing motorists at 101kph on dual laned highways while the road toll doubled, people drowned and all motorists felt harassed and threatened for doing exactly what they had done for years without penalty.

Didnt hear if he wore a helmet or not.

Drought!!!?

Drought is widely regarded in agricultural terms as a prolonged period of low rainfall when pastures and crops become seriously degraded by dehydration.

Yes last spring was one of low precipitation in many districts and having traveled the East coast from North Otago to The Bay of Plenty in the last 50 days there are now pockets with fodder insufficiency from "The Dry" but drought it aint.

Large Parts of Australia have been in that situation for several years and many rural properties are in a savage drought. With livestock having lost a serious degree of body weight, water supplies gone burger and absolutely zero opportunity to remove stock as buyers do not exist, increasing numbers of Aussie Farmers are taking their lives as despair overcomes their will to continue.

Talk of Drought here is a little overwrought, we have had lower rainfall in many districts and possibly the best summer weather in many years for those who can unashamably enjoy such benefits but after disastrous floods late last Autumn and options aplenty to remove stock threatened with  a shortage of appropriate fodder supplies, talk of drought is just a bit previous.

However to the  talking heads who daily justify their place in the world of infotainment it seems good copy, but much of the output is merely Male Bovine Excrement.
One such bimbo last week ran off at her gob when predicting showers on the East Coast would bring relief to drought ravaged farmers.
Sorry Ms Bimbo,  such cooler temperatures and minimal precipitation wont make a single positive move to alleviate dry pastures and non-irrigated crops, although such weather  relief will make some small advances in effectiveness of irrigation.
Growing plants in moisture stress need in excess of 50mm over days to make any viable difference, with soil penetration of at least 40mm, anything less will only create more problems than solutions.
Last Summers low alpine snowfalls and an absence of Wet Westerlies have created lowflow problems in many of the East flowing river systems from Otago to East Cape, reducing irrigation takes but some of that results in bans based on arbitrary limits that have little basis in reality.
When the Amuri Plains races and Borderdyke system was built in the 1970s the minimum flow allowing the water take was set at 12Cubic meters a second. when reviewed some 30 years on it was decided that that would double to 24 cumecs.
In the history of the flows in the Waiau before and since the advent of the Amuri plains scheme I am unaware of any threat eventuating from low flows at the 12 cumec figure.
Similarly with the Waitaki river, along with the Waikato the most developed Hydro generation systems in our country. Rather than bureaucratically declining irrigation takes why not review possible storage enhancement and water management protocols to provide the needed irrigation water in high use periods.

Most settled agricultural areas of NZ can expect rains to regenerate plant growth in late February through March and it will only be should that fail to occur that I will entertain thoughts of "Drought" in the meantime it is a glorious summer "Dry" and god knows we all remember those from our childhood.

MIGHTY RIVER POWER - THE WRECKERS AND THE 'DOG'

Readers will well recall the relentless campaign waged by Labour, the Greens and Winston First against the partial privatisation of Mighty River Power.       The upshot of their campaign was to drive down the issue price thereby denying the taxpayer the benefit of several hundreds of millions of dollars.   Some commentators, less charitable than I, described their campaign as deliberate economic sabotage.   Far be for me to comment on that.

Readers will further recall that less than a year ago on 3 February 2014 MRP shares were being traded at $1.97, fifty three cents below the issue price.   This led to Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove (the man who makes your friendly neighborhood 'Mafiasco' appear Christlike) labeling the shares  a "dog".

Bad news and good news.   For Labour, the Greens, Winston First and Clayton Cosgrove the bad news is that at the close of business on Friday the shares were being traded at $3.23 with investors having already received two dividend payments and those who who bought in at the float shortly to receive their bonus 'loyalty' shares.   The good news is just that.

Some 'dog'.

Gee That Is The Answer For Sure?

Two Dairy Farmers did not want to wear "safety" helmets when riding ATVs in the course of their chosen farming activity.

Numpties riding desks at occupational health and safety said they must so set out to make an example of the two taxpayer, wealth creator, employment facilitators in rebellion.

The Numpties after a series of harassment efforts, take them to court and a Judge with apparent zero knowledge of what was at stake decides to join the Numpties and sets the penalty at a nice round figure of $20 000 each, a total of $40 000. That'll teach them who is in charge
Sort of telethon if you will.

Now some new information makes what seemed a serious state sanctioned master class in subjugation of two who dared to reject the state's will, looks even more capricious and just plain stupid

(1) Had the two rebels been unemployed gang members heading to the tinny house for a few tokes sans the coal scuttle and largely ineffective open face helmets, they would be subject to a fine of $100 each for failing to wear a helmet.
That is predicated on the simple fact that it would be almost certain the Gang member would probably have ignored the judicial ramifications while the two farmers had easily accessed assets  in liquid form, not withstanding their cows had to be milked and therefore the law knew with a high degree  of certainty where they would be at any given time.

(2) The numbers of serious income earning farmers who find the rather capricious and ineffectual H & S laws a nonsense and the difference made by the helmet that satisfies H & S, will in all probability make minimal difference in out come should an accident occur as most are so light and minimal in protected area.
I was one of those who went on the road on a big road bike in my fifties and the helmet I chose was way more capable of preventing a head injury than the little plastic models deemed by desk drivers to suffice riding an ATV while farming.

(3) I have no access to figures for the recent Holiday period but from my spasmodic attention to news it seems to me drownings have killed a whole lot more than ATV incidents so will the desk drivers move to address that salient fact.
Well no because you see the law that clobbered two hard working taxpaying farmers does not apply to recreational use.
OH&S tried it on with a farmer in Hawkes Bay and his Daughter, a lawyer, read up and asked the Judge to dismiss on the grounds that HB farmer did not accrue any payment from the farming operation and therefore the rubbish 'seen to be doing something' law did not apply.
Judge agreed and it all went pearshaped.
So it would seem I can go to my mates farm and ride around, doing far more risk averse activity and the idiot law does not apply just as joe average is free to drown himself floundering at a river mouth as he declines to wear a life jacket.
Will another bunch of Numpties decree that everyone within ten meters of water must have "water wings".

Quadsafe Supreme Red ATV Helmet Quad Bike Use
Approved as a "safety helmet while riding an ATV in an employment situation costing $195.
That will save a life up to 30kph, maybe, yeah right.
Ram the head inside that into a concrete post at 30 kph and I will be betting on the post.

That is a safety helmet

Try telling Bruce to get in behind wearing that or whistling a command.

So it would seem that little Sandra Public, six years old, weighing in at 23Kg with zero training or preparation visiting Uncles farm for Sunday Lunch, decides she can ride the 500cc vtwin fully speced  ATV weighing in at around 500Kgs and becomes a statistic.
No prosecution, no fine, no judicial result just a terrible tragedy.
Sandra's Auntie, a working partner in the farm, grabs the ATV to get the mail 250 meters down the drive, gets munted crossing to the mailbox by the neighbor's tearaway speeding past in the Ford Ranger and grieving hubby is liable for a 20K fine. for not preventing Sandra's mum riding the ATV without a "helmet" and making her walk to the Mailbox.

Brigadier General Tony McAuliffe summed up such nonsense at Bastogne when he replied to a Wermachct surrender demand with a one word reply;  "N U T S".

EL PAPA SPEAKS OUT

I see that the Pope sez there are limits to freedom of speech especially when it insults or ridicules some-ones faith.   You can read the article here

This comes against the backdrop of news that in dozens of countries around the world, most notably in Muslim-majority nations, governments there are turning to anti-blasphemy laws to aggressively punish alleged transgressions, particularly against Islam.

I think the Pope is on dangerous ground.   Although he refutes the claim that his statement may be seen in some quarters to somehow endorse the attack against Charlie Hebdo, nevertheless his comments will bring a degree of comfort to the likes of Derek Fox who argued exactly that.    Not that the French will give a toss anyway.   Anti clericalism is deeply ingrained as a tenant of French society.

A nation that is strong and comfortable in itself can stand satire.  Indeed, being able to stand satire is the hallmark of a developed society.

But of even greater concern to me is the situation in North Korea.   There, the Il-Sung dynasty has been elevated to the level of a deity.  Citizens worship the deity.   Those who dare to criticise are rounded up and disappear into forced-labour camps never to be seen again.    The Pope has (inadvertently I'm sure) has added a certain legitimacy to what happens in that pariah state.   Certain that the North Korean government will play it as such.

I am reminded that it was not too long ago that the Catholic Church was burning at the stake those who sought to question the 'faith'.   El Papa's call to restrict the freedom of speech is a step backwards.

How Times Have Changed

Do you remember when Sir Reginald Ansett referred to striking Anset air hostesses as 'a bunch of old boilers;?  Australians roared their approval.

Today some poor bastard with an unfortunate name in Queensland has been forced to apologise for describing the phenomenon of 'tuckshop arms.'

James Delingpole was right when he said Australians have sold their balls to the lowest bidder.

Darwin Award

A man attempting to cut a 240v power feed with a pair of pliers was electrocuted the other day.

It just so happens that Adolf spent many childhood and teenage holidays at Bland Bay which is on the other side of Whangaruru harbour.  In those days there were only five batches on the whole peninsular, no road access for the last five miles, no fences, lots of wild horses and heaps of fish to be caught within fifty yards of the shore.

FAMILIES AND RELLIES OF POLITICIANS SHOULD BE OFF LIMITS

I see the Royal New Zealand Herald (that was) ran a story about John Key's son Max supposedly having a round of golf with a suspected felon that later turned out to be a teenage hoax.    OK, it's the holiday season and they need to fill column inches but I hold very strongly to the view that the families and rellies of politicians should be off limits to the media.

I don't care a stuff that Stephanie Key covers herself with vegetables and cream and calls it art.   I will judge John Key for what he does and doesn't do.

I don't care a stuff that that Labour's front bencher Nanaia Mahuta is the aunt of Kototangi Paki, the second son of the so called Maori King, convicted of drink driving, two counts of burglary and one of theft..   I will judge Naina Mahuta for what she does or doesn't do.

I don't care a stuff that Winston First's Ron Mark's brother is a patched member of a gang that has criminal connections.  I will judge Ron Mark for what he does or doesn't do.

I don't care a stuff that the Green's Kennedy Graham is the brother of Sir Douglas Graham, convicted of making false statements in the Lombard Company prospectus.   I will judge Kennedy Graham for what he does or doesn't do.

What family members or rellies of politicians do is of no interest to me.   Media interviewing their typewriters is no substitute for real investigative journalism.

At Least Some still Have Testicles

The publishers of satirical French magazine that suffered the terrorist attack on it's offices that saw ten staff slaughtered by demented so called followers of Islam along with two police officers ironically one also a follower of Islam, have defiantly published on schedule the next copy with another glimpse of the pedophile prophet as an image on the front page.

The front cover of Charlie Hebdo

"All is forgiven"  and "I Am Charlie".

What a contrast to the emasculated gormless pricks who are no more than appeasers.

A few observations.
I can accept, although am still mystified myself, that for a follower to make fun of a figure from the annals of the origins of their faith could be ruled blasphemous but non adherents, why.
There is absolutely no racism in such acts as Islam is supposedly a religion and unlike Judaism where to be one of the faithful has a bloodline requirement. Hells bells Moslems recruit from our prisons some of our rather rejected of society as converts and one wonders why they are an attraction.
A "faith" that not only enslaves women and denies them any education opportunities for genuine advancement not only subjects those born without a penis to a completelysubserviant and denigrating position in their antiquated law, but pursues other apparent followers of the 'faith' deemed to be unworthy in the eyes of the controller of the armed force in the ascendant.
A religious entity that has splintered just as Christendom has but appears to have avoided for the 1400 years of it's existence to make any moves to reconciliation or  accommodation of the various sub-sects.
Until the masses who do have some claim to be peace loving and without any desire to kill or enslave all who do not fit the current image of the true faithful, can influence the leadership, both religious and military to move to modernise and get along with those of the faith deemed to have detoured and the infidels of other faiths then claims by Merkel, Obama, Cameron and co are just fuelling the aims of Islam that are definitely not peaceful.

It is not "hate speech", nor is it racism, and it is not blasphemy, it is satire you humorless idiots so just take a long hard look at your selves.
What Judaism has endured for a lot longer, than the followers of a power crazed chap with strange ideas on how society exists, is so much more extreme, so build a bridge and get over it then perhaps that wonderful civilisation that existed  prior to the suffocating efforts of the pedophile prophet might be  restored to its rightful place in the history of open minded people today.

RBNZ AND 'INFLATION'

I see there is some passing comment in the Royal New Zealand Herald (that was) that the Reserve Bank Governor might have some explaining to do given that inflation is expected to fall to less than 1% which is outside the RBNZ target range of between 1% and 3%.     Certainly that appears likely when you factor in the unprecedented drop in fuel prices with the NZL dollar remaining close to historic highs.

There is no great argument that high inflation is bad for the economy as a whole.     A side effect of high inflation is that it encourages people to borrow and buy in the expectation of prices going up.    It is also argued that negative inflation (deflation) is bad for the economy as it can destroy equity and can encourage people to hold off spending decisions in the expectation of a reduction in prices.

While both may be right in theory there are many factors in play that determine how people spend or not spend but one thing I do know .... rampant inflation is a killer, so to are mortgage rates at 11%+ as they were not so long ago.     Give me low or negative inflation any day over that.       The Country owes much to the passing of the Reserve Bank Act and also the Public Finance Act which requires the Treasury to disclose the fiscal risks faced by an in-coming government prior to any election.

Bluebridge Cookstraight Ferries.

A graphic portrayal of how NZ will succeed and a compelling argument against Governments trying to run business

In a farming career spanning both main Islands for over fifty years Cook Straight has been a major influence in that journey.

Commercial and social needs were in the early decades completely dominated by the monopoly of the State run New Zealand Rail and frustration was a common theme.

One of the biggest and most frustrating came in late summer 1980 when we were moving our farming operation from North Canterbury to the Wairarapa.
Taking two vehicles to Picton we continued to Masterton with one to leave it there and return by Bus and ferry to the other and continue the task of relocation.
Masterton had one of those days,  hotter than yesterday's as we journeyed south on our current trip with a three o'clock temperature, a tar melting 30 plus degrees.
In 1980 we traveled south in a very basic coach of NZRRS and arrived at the Wellington terminal in plenty of time to catch the ferry but when we pulled up the driver, obviously in the loop, asked us all to remain on the sweltering bus while he went inside the terminal, returning in minutes,  without much embarrassment informed those of us intending to sail on the ferry would need to find accommodation as the Cooks and Stewards had a need to make a further point in their continuing battle with the spineless state servant managers and all sailings were cancelled for however long it took.
A long hot night in a very average hotel, it was 1980 and Wellington had a lot like us competing for a bed, we went to another monopoly, Air NZ the following morning to get home.
Swmbo could only get a seat to CHC while I fortunately managed one to Woodbourne that enabled me to retrieve the second vehicle from Picton drive to CHC pick her up and return to our now being vacated North Canterbury farmbase.
Thereby lies another little anecdote associated with why the Government should never be allowed to operate any commercial entity, in the seat that could have been there for Mrs Gravedodger, next to me on the hop across the straight, was a Lufthansa hostess travelling on a 10% normal fare that I understood were only to be allocated at that heavily discounted rate if no full paying passenger required it.  With legs up to her waist and looks that would make any pimply faced clerk wobble at the knees, it was no contest.

Back to the main thrust of this post, that little expensive hiccup but one of many by the forerunner to kiwirail, they also managed to "lose" a wagon of farm hardware for three weeks by sending it to Marton rather than Masterton, an easy mistake I completely understand they both have M as a starting point, where it languished for some three weeks, its whereabouts a complete mystery to all involved. When they finally managed to get it to Masterton pressure was immediately applied with no regard for their omissions for us to empty it although their errors had caused considerable disruption to our planning.
That was just a cost of doing business with a government owned and controlled commercial entity being manipulated by a plethora of unions with 'management possessing absolutely zero understanding on matters of commercial reality and good customer relationships within such management at all levels.

In 1992 however there was a total rearrangement of the way things were, when Jim Barker and his partners in Otorohanga Transport decided he could and would smash the sickening commercial reality handbrake on the NZ economy with its total dependence on a union dominated clogged artery between the two islands.
Jim and his heroic partners started with a glorified barge to take livestock from Wellington to Picton and back in open deck pens with many hurdles placed by sympathetic equally monopoly driven minions at every opportunity.
But they did it and it just grew and grew, better vessels and finally some better facilities onshore from Wellington and Marlborough ports.
In 1992 with the arrival of The Santa Regina the pioneers entered the higher public profile, passenger market so ruthlessly exploited by The Interislander except that customers were front and center rather than glossy imaging via the mass media.
Word of mouth and building commercial relationships with many focus groups saw my NZ Motor Caravan Association gain discounted travel concessions across the well documented as one of the most challenging bits of water in the world.
Of course just as with the ill fated entry of Ansett Australia to our aviation market, when someone takes on the monopoly and in particular a state owned entity I immediately give them a fair go and if they deliver, they earn my loyalty.

So it was yesterday when our now somewhat chaos influenced planning ability comes up against reality, I booked a crossing on-line with Bluebridge as a return leg from a NI sojourn of nearly a month.
Since a certain Mr Parkinson came to live with us,  making plans for the future is only what would be nice at best. So having obtained a redeye ticket to return to Picton with my much preferred carrying company Bluebridge, but a cabin, always desirable in our new relationship with 'Parky' a  much needed addition for enjoyable travel not available on line, it was beyond description, my relief when the always very helpful and considerate customer focused staff of Bluebridge managed to give swmbo and moi a cabin with the added advantage of boarding early at midnight for the 0230 sailing and sleep until 0530 when the wake up  call came to disembark at 0600.

While Kiwirail continues to attempt to compete, often without the success that the current operators of the alternate provider of cross straight travel enjoy, with the constraint of profitability always at the forefront of  their efforts, Bluebridge will enjoy my wholehearted support as long as they survive without that oh so nice government backstop enjoyed by their SOE competition.
A good mate on hearing of our short notice needs and special requirements for the return south, was mystified that The SOE option was not canvassed and is probably still wondering at my avoidance of what he saw as a viable alternative.
Well you see, when a company and its shop window staff give me the clear impression that the customer matters, such attitudes will continue to enjoy a blind loyalty from me without question.
While the government guaranteed SOE  continue to only respond to the innovation and commercial creativeness of Bluebridge with their very highly regarded Cooks Straight Ferries, Kiwirail, protected at all times by that "too big to fail" mantra might have advantage of image but delivery with their travails of breakdowns and sullen arrogant staff response will always be merely  a backup to my getting across the water.

Go Bluebridge you good things.

TIME FOR A JIHAD AGAINST JIHADISTS

This post is written against a backdrop of the warning by Andrew Parker,
Director General of Britain's domestic spy agency M15, that Al Qaeda militants are planning an attack on the West aimed at inflicting mass causalities on transport systems and/or iconic targets.   Disregard that at your peril.

No-one but no-one (except for the terminally stupid) should now fail to understand that Islamic terrorism poses a major threat to western civilization as we know it.   The massacre of 160 school children in Pakistan; the Ottawa, Sydney and Paris attacks ...  the list lengthens ... tomorrow a place near you.  So, what's to be done?   We have two choices.   We can be either proactive or reactive in facing the threat.   Choose reactive in the knowledge that you are in effect surrendering the initiative to the enemy.  It's a choice but its no choice. Rather, it's a recipe for disaster.   It will come back to bite with a vengeance with much hand wringing after the event.

I repeat what I've said in previous posts.   Recent events point to the need for a paradigm shift in the way we tackle the threat posed by Jihadists who implicitly believe that killing westerners is a one-way ticket to paradise. And if anyone sincerely believes that here in New Zealand we are somehow immune from a home-grown threat then more pity them as doubly terminally stupid.

Where the Government has reason to believe that there exists person(s) who have been radicalized to the point where they pose a distinct threat to society then I believe it has a duty of care to have those persons quarantined from society.     There are legal precedents for this.    In the jurisdiction I have some working knowledge of the 'precautionary approach' has been endorsed by the judgement of the Court of Appeal in My Noodle vs the Queenstown-Lakes District Council [2009] NZCA 564.   Take that one step further.   In the criminal jurisdiction, Section 82 of the Sentencing Act 2002 provides for 'preventative detention' to "protect the community from those who pose a significant and ongoing threat to the safety of its members".   Marry the two together and you have a proactive way forward.

How might this happen.    One way might be by Order in Council made under the Royal Prerogative (i.e not backed by legislation) and providing for the Attorney General, on being satisfied that reasonable grounds exist for the incarceration of such persons, to issue a direction to this effect.   You might go so far as to argue that Habeas corpus should not apply in such instances.   On balance this may be a step too far.  I remain open minded on this point.

Eddie the Con has challenged me to name those persons likely to be involved.    Obviously I can't simply because I'm not privy to that information.    But our intelligence agencies do have a reported list comprising 40+ names. That to my mind reflects the scale of the problem.    But be very clear.   I am not talking about the wholesale and indiscriminate rounding up of individuals.   It's only those deemed to pose a real risk to society.

I fully expect to be criticised by the liberal effete.  For them protecting the 'rights' of the wannabee terrorist is more important than ensuring society is protected from them.    That criticism is, for me, water off a ducks back.

Why Cant The Humorless Goat Shaggers See How The Are a Setup Made in Heaven

Islam by its adherence to an unchanged pseudo religious philosophy for fourteen hundred years  is such a fertile field for a c2015 cartoonist in the eyes of a discerning and culturally open mindset.

The old cry of just asking for it is reawakened so soon after nearly all thinking people have rejected it as a defense strategy in sexual assault cases.

I unashamably suggest they really are saking for it.

Farrar at kiwiblog has at the end of a post on the recent coniptions over defamatory cartoons, a link to cable cartoons.

Below is one that had resonance for moi.

158281 600 immortal cartoons

They who Stand And Do Nothing Are No Better.

I apologise for posting on these matters as I do but I have little desire to desist.

In the aftermath of WW2 many Germans, even up to some of the highest in involvement, claimed to have had no knowledge of the atrocities that were perpetrated by so many in their blind loyalty to herr Schikelgruber.
Of course they knew, at least after Kristallnacht November9/10 1938 as more and more Jews just disappeared.

Full trains heading to Poland and returning empty, the odoriferous stench around the "work" camps, the constant need to add new workers with no expansion of the camps, the activities of the einsatzgruppen, and the constant need for those who witnessed or otherwise came to knowledge of the worst excesses of the Nazi regime to somehow unload the very normal feelings of guilt and psychiatric pressure such atrocities wrought.

All those who knew and did nothing were all enablers while the few such as the White Rose and The Colonels plot, working in isolation were quickly crushed by the overwhelming grip of the gestapo and those Nazis who were more than content to let it all continue by not speaking out allowed the killing machine to wreak its awful work.

All the talk about the millions of Followers of Islam as being peaceful and of no danger to Our Culture and Nationhood are just more enablers.

Christendom is littered with martyrs who on obtaining knowledge and education came to question the overwhelming power of the Church and its clear and obvious excesses in the name of The Faith.
Burnings, drownings, beheadings and just pulling peoples bodies apart were commonplace and until Luther and other enlightened participants found the courage to seek a more acceptable way the "Church" just carried on its murderous path of removing all who questioned or even slightly embarrassed the hierarchy.

So it will be with Islam, faced with moderating moves towards enlightenment and reason will continue to enable the more extreme amongst them to carry out Lone Wolf attacks but in one century or as many as it takes, until a majority of the followers of "The Religion of Peace" in concert force real change and break the power of the Mad Mullahs, it will not happen.
The Millions of peaceful followers are  only enablers for now.

The slaughtered Cartoonists and their fellow workers will be as The White Rose, a footnote in history as some day reason will prevail.

It will be a massive and often bloody work for now as events in France are testimony to.

Subtle but not even close to accurate.

The ten unarmed innocents slaughtered in the bloodbath at Charlie Hebdo were Murdered plain and simple.
The Killers had no justification for their actions
The two police shot and killed outside during the escape were also murdered doing their sworn duty one of them while wounded disarmed and down on the pavement..
As this tragedy unfolds with the killers allegedly now encircled holding hostages, any further deaths will not involve "executions".
Further deaths will be more murders and or death from police gunshots while resisting arrest, in self defence, collateral deaths or at a stretch willful suicide or maybe actual suicide.

Calling any of the deaths so far or any still to come as this Islamist fueled killing spree unravels, executions, is just further sanitising and ignoring the salient truth of what the people of France are being subjected to.
Terrorism pure and simple to force legitimate authority to accept the will of a few demented and effectively equipped cowards acting under the umbrella of a long failed corrupted ideology' and attempting to thwart people acting within the Laws of The French Nation through fear and intimidation.

Btw to Tinman who asked why no one contributor here had posted the cartoons. please tell me what is to be gained, they have had all the coverage needed, further would not achieve anything.
Otoh maybe you are suggesting shouting fire in a full theatre of screaming jump to a pausing suicide is exercising 'free speech'.

Update!!  While writing that post the NZHerald reports the two Charlie Hebdo murderers and the associated second hostage taker have been killed by French Special forces and all hostages freed unharmed, I guess they meant unwounded might be some psychological issues methinks.

Update two
Amidst the confusion it could be that the second Hostage situation was more deadly than first reported,
Hostages were killed before the rescue was launched.

Will this lead to a change in attitude from Merkell, Cameron, Obama and other head in the sand cowards intent on legacy and electability, alas I dont think so.

Criminally Brainless

According to the Greens, South Australia's bush fires were caused by Global Warming.  (Apparently the dickhead who lit up an incinerator in 44 degree heat had nothing to do with it.)

Fact is, the bush fires were made catastrophic by the concurrence of an accumulation of available fuel, high winds and high temperatures.  They were caused by aforementioned dickhead.
Of the three contributors, man can control only one, the accumulation of heavy fuel loads.  This control is achieved by 'controlled burning' in cool months.

Guess who opposes controlled burning?

The Greens.

Because some poor little Hairy Arsed Wombat might get its nose burnt.

These are the same Greens who infiltrated councils in Victoria and introduced bylaws requiring trees to be planted close to houses on lifestyle blocks.  When those trees burned a few years ago, 141 people died.

Twelve Dead, The Response Will Be What?

The second World War when The Facism of Germany and Italy plus Fanatical Nationalism of Japan threatened to dominate the world, came to the big showdown because of two major failings of those who naively considered there could be enduring peace after the bloody stalemate and appalling deaths of WW1.
Isolationism policies of The United States and appeasement policies of Europeans with France and The United Kingdom in the van.

Very few ever desire war or have any wish to embroil their nation in such destructive pursuit of victory for their beliefs, hence the successful if somewhat lucky results of MAD throughout the cold war.

But Churchill was a lonely man as Herr Schikelgruber rose to power in Germany while the UK and French Governments hoped it would all just go away and Stalin, busy consolidating his power, slaughtered thousands of potential threats including much of his political leadership and almost all his high ranking military  leadership.

Nazism was always going to be seeking expansionism and conquest, one only had to read Mein Kampf to understand that and as Schikelgruber slowly rose to power through constitutional means albeit pretty rugged and brutal and with little regard for the lives of those that stood in the way, he did reach the Chancellorship within legitimate constitutional  means as leader of government in a minority mandate.
However once in the driving seat any means needed were employed to turn such a constitutional foothold into totalitarian dictatorship.

All the while German rearmament and development of military capability ran virtually unimpeded under the  UK administrations of MacDonald as Labour then National, Baldwin and Chamberlain as conservatives with an almost total impotent response of Britain to rearm to meet the threat
Similarly the thirties saw France under a veritable succession of leaders with precious little stomach for war including Laval who after serving in the Vichy administration was executed at wars end and the man in the hot seat as the phony war ended with full scale German invasion, Reynand who had two months earlier succeeded the appeaser Deladier,  finally albeit far too late tried to stem the Wermacht.

Today the West including a diminishing Christendom and a seemingly ever growing politically correct appeasement of Islam is just ignoring the lessons of history.
Islam may be a religion and have a massive majority of followers who have no wish to invade, vanquish, or enslave any other nation, however the clerical leadership and a small minority of so called followers at present manifesting as ISIS attempting to establish a Caliphate beginning in Northern Iraq and Syria, are anything but peaceful.
Al Queda, ISIS and many other military groups have an intention to kill, enslave or otherwise vanquish all who they see as standing in the path of their counter crusade.
Yesterdays assault on the editorial HQ of the Magazine, Charlie Hebdo where ten journalists were slaughtered and two Police killed in the retreat of three armed soldiers of Islam shouting "Allah Akbar" and "we Killed Charlie Hebdo" have given a whole new meaning as to how violence can threaten Free Speech. In fact not dissimilar to how the Nazi's gained their power.

David Low of the Evening Standard, was a cartoonist who was on the Nazi death list for when the invasion of Britain was accomplished, because he, Low was regarded and correctly so, as one of the greatest weapons at Churchill's hand.
The merciless depictions of Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin were a massive weapon in the propaganda battle in what became a fight to the death.
That is possibly why the leaders of Islam are so vehement and now murderous in their desire to stamp on any such portrayal of their Pedophile Prophet or even just somewhat harmless depiction of Islam.

The Satanic verses saw Salmon Rushdie placed under a Fatwa or quasi judicial/ clerical sentence of death to be carried out by anyone of the faith, by Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran.
Jyllands-Posten a Norwegian News paper also guilty of publishing material deemed by some clerical leaders of Islam as offensive has suffered attacks but yesterdays assault on Charlie Hebdo has elevated the situation to new heights and somewhere along this path of madness we must accept it is war or be enslaved or killed.

EAD placed the following quote on Kiwiblog in a comment at General debate this morning and I see nothing but history repeating, if we are to ignore such lessons it will only be at our peril.

“Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” – Winston Churchill.

ISN'T CRICKET A WONDERFUL GAME

So there I was at 'tea' on Monday with NZL 5 down in their second innings, with Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum both  gone, and close on 100 runs still behind Sri Lanka's first innings total and I said to myself that a result was all but guaranteed.

Which only goes to show how wrong you can be even when you're right.

Well done to Brendon and the boys with a special acknowledgement to Kane Williamson and BJ Watling.

Still Not Perfect.

The Indian Cricket team in Australia have refused to have the DRS review system for the current tour  of The West Isle and outcomes have reinforced the in/out nature of dismissals, both with DRS and without but over all an improved accuracy

Sri Lanka might just be rueing giving their consent for its use on their current tour here,  in particular with the result for Sangakkara, given not out for a waft outside off, Keeper Wattling no emotion other than relief at safely gloving the ball on the move, belated and less than convincing response from a packed slip field but to be fair a very animated Trent Boult, Ump says not out then third with very convincing Snikko, but no hot spot or deviation, overuled and an understandably chagrined Sangakkara had to depart.

Had he stayed it was a test destined to possibly require a photo finish at around 1745, now at nearly 5 an over it seems to be destined for a draw.

Whatever, the golden run for NZC rolls on as win lose or draw this evening this test along with so much since that debacle at Capetown when a first innings of just 45 ensured a heavy defeat McCallum's men have performed with almost unbelievable distinction.
That Williamson / Wattling Pship that propelled them to the top of the alltime sixth wicket stand in which the ran down Bradman and Fingleton then one of our own was awesome, to use a much overused descriptive.

BEST AMERICAN PRESIDENT POST WW2

I have a certain fascination with US politics and once took the prize in a Quiz evening when I was able to correctly name Barry Goldwater's Vice Presidential running mate in the 1964 Presidential election (Congressman William (Bill) Miller, New York).

And so it was a few weeks ago I enjoyed a very interesting discussion with Robert Ayson, Professor of Strategic Studies at Victoria University, where we rated all the American Presidents post WW2.   We come from quite different backgrounds and it was even more interesting that we both saw Harry S Truman as the stand out performer with his assumption of the Presidency in a vacuum, his decision to drop the bomb, his championing of the Marshall Plan as the catalyst for the reconstruction of Europe, his come from behind win over Governor Dewey in the 1948 Presidential election ('give em hell Harry'), the Truman Doctrine, his recognition of Israel, the Berlin Airlift and for having the 'balls' to fire MacArthur.

Honorable mentions to Eisenhower for keeping the cold war cold; Johnson with his championing of the 'Great Society but blighted by the Vietnam War; Nixon for his foreign policy initiatives (fatally flawed character notwithstanding) and Clinton despite himself.

Kennedy was President for too short a time to make a considered judgement not helped by the myth and mystic that surrounds his time in the White House.

Reagan an enigma.   Restored Americas faith in itself but his management of the economy was crap.

We agreed that history will look unkindly on Ford, Carter and both Bush's with perhaps the greatest failure of all being ..... Obama.

Please feel free to agree/disagree.   Would welcome your comments.

Where Quantity Trumps Quality

Does any sane person ever read the yards upon yards of pretentious crap written by arts critics?

Go to the link for a review of a book which jointly won the Aussie PM's literary prize for fiction.

Here's just a very small sample.

"It’s May or June, the Cam is stuffed with expensive punts, which in turn are stuffed with moneyed tourists. A bunch of under-employed post-examinal students are dementedly heaving and levering away at one of the massive ornamental granite balls crowning the parapet of one of the college bridges. They’ve prised it loose, the entire river – the strollers and dawdlers and smoochers along the Backs, the rest of the shipping – seems to be watching in horror as it’s directly threatening a punt-load of Japanese tourists: the looming atrocity is of diplomatic, hemispheric, intercultural dimensions. The tourists abandon their vessel, bitterly going over the side with their smartphones and their wallets and their cameras, and next thing the great orb is sitting on the water, maybe 99 per cent above the surface, you never saw anything bobbing like that. The wicked students piss themselves laughing, the bedraggled victims straggle and angrily bark their way ashore through the rushes. That’s how I felt reading the Tasmanian novelist Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning and almost universally adored (some reviewers reached for their Tolstoy; others forbade any comparisons at all) Narrow Road to the Deep North: watching tourists hoaxed by polystyrene."

I guess if you can only write drivel you might as well criticize those who can write real books..
