ON REFUGEE 'JOHN'

It is reported that in the Wellington High Court 'John' was sentenced to eleven years and six months imprisonment for the rape of two teenagers aged 18 and 16.

It appears that John came to New Zealand as a refugee from Uganda when he was a child and, while he had no previous convictions, he held 'conservative' beliefs that females should not dress provocatively nor should they walk home alone.

One can only speculate what conservative beliefs is a code-word for.

Specialist medical reports had it that John was assessed to be at high risk of re-offending because he did not recognise he had done anything wrong.

No doubt John will be eagerly awaiting moves by the Corrections Minister to make good on his promise to empty prisons of three out of every ten persons incarcerated.

Nice bit of trolling there Vet.

John's status as a refugee has nothing to do with his status as a rapist, unless you are trying, as I suspect, to further the narrative that all refugees are rapists. I am sure rape was unknown in New Zealand until Jacinda opened up the floodgates to refugees.

I am unable to find any reference to the Corrections Minister wanting to free 30% of current prisoners, as you claim. labour party Policy states "Set a target of reducing the number of people in prison by 30% over fifteen years, and undertake our comprehensive plan to reach that target." Where does that say prisoners will be released, that rapists will be freed to roam the streets? In your fevered imagination, but nowhere else.

There are many ways to achieve that target without compromising community safety. For example, approximately 10% of the prison population is for drug offences and I can bet that none of these are there for being alcoholics. We treat alcoholics as having a medical condition, not as criminals. If we extended medical treatment instead of incarceration to drug users, that's 10% of the target achieved at no cost to community safety.

Prison should be used to protect the community from rapists such as "John" and from other violent criminals. But what is achieved by locking up drug users?

Good for Labour for being prepared to look at solutions other than "Lock her up!"

Male homosexual sex became illegal in New Zealand when the country became part of the British Empire in 1840 and adopted English law making male homosexual acts punishable by death. The Offences Against The Person Act of 1867 changed the penalty of buggery from execution to life imprisonment. In 1893 the law was broadened so that sexual activity between men constituted "sexual assault" even if it was consensual. Penalties included life imprisonment, hard labour and flogging. Sex between women has never been legally prohibited in New Zealand.

In 1961 the penalties for male homosexual activity were reduced, reflecting changing attitudes towards homosexuality. Shortly afterwards the Dorian Society and later the Wolfenden Association were formed to campaign for legalisation of male homosexual sex. In 1968 a petition signed by 75 prominent citizens and calling for legislative change was presented to (and rejected by) parliament.

The first parliamentary attempt at decriminalisation was made in 1974, with National MP Venn Young's Crimes Amendment Bill. This would have legalised sexual activity between men over the age of 21, but was defeated 34 to 29, with 23 abstentions. Warren Freer proposed similar legislation in 1979 and 1980 but this did not receive support from gay activist groups, who felt that a different age of consent for gay and straight sex would perpetuate discrimination and homophobia.

Death for being gay.....no country, religion or race advances at the same rate as you well know through your time in Asia over 50 years. So I do not understand why a somebody with such a wealth of experience and admired for his good works would stoop to such a ridiculous effort to denigrate what I presume is the Labour Government.

Compared with the current court cases of our home grown terrorists like the Bandido's and family/child abuse by the Mongrel mob don't you thinks that your post sounds a little xenophobic,

Heh folks ... don't shoot the messenger or perhaps you agree that having people like John wondering our streets is nothing to worry about. I disagree.

Egbut ... sorry fella, you've lost me completely. What has homosexuality got to do with this?

The Veteran said...

David ... suggest you take orf your rose coloured spectacles and get real. There are very few drug 'users' incarcerated. Most of those 'inside' for illicit drug offences are suppliers albeit that some of the suppliers will also be users. So you're proposing to release suppliers back into the world to continue to wreck their havoc on society ... figures.

Given that he's from Uganda, a country notorious for conservative Christianity, my money would be on it being a code-word for "Christianity," with the code-word being used to avoid upsetting Christians. I fully agree that religious fundamentalists make very poor immigrants.

PM ... uptick. For the record 84% Christian and 14% Muslim.

Gerald ... thank you for that. I thought David's 10% was a tad too light.

Interesting the number of persons on remand at 28.5% of the total prison population is more than double what it was back in 2000 (13.3%). That would indicate, contrary to popular opinion, Judges today are less likely to grant bail. Remember too that approx 90% of remand prisoners are repeat offenders.

One way for Davis to achieve his 30% reduction in prison numbers would be to wind back the provisions of the Bail Act which toughened the granting of bail ... but there would be a price to pay for that.

Veteran......Conservative or "muscular" Christianity was taken to Uganda about the same time as we were hanging homosexuals 160 years ago. Merely pointing out that races and countries develop at a different pace.

There are some States in the US where John would be applauded for his views (not the assault). I don't care one jot about about his future but I do find it xenophobic to single this case out when the Mongrel Mob need a little bit attention from the Govt.

I'm curious as to how many gay men got hanged in the old days. I suspect gays were pretty private about their relationships but to protect their jobs and social standing rather than their lives.

As far as John's religious beliefs go there is nothing in orthodox Christianity that supports his view while its a widespread "normal" view in Islam so the latter is more likely.

Legbut please tell me more about these homosexuals 'we' hanged during the late nineteenth century.

Historical references, if you don't mind. Let's not have another leftist inspired myth like the 'stolen generation' where nobody can actually tell you who was stolen or point to any historical record to support the bullshit story.

Of course you good friends in the Middle East don't hang homosexuals. They have reformed and no longer carry out this evil practice. They jut throw the poor bastards off the tenth story roof.

Troll DLT

Ensign James Hepburn, 25, and Drummer Thomas White, 16, hanged in front of Newgate Prison, London, March 7, 1811, for sodomy [9]
James Pratt and John Smith, two London men who became the last two to be hanged for sodomy in England, in November 1835........If you actually read posts and not knee jerk on the first line you would see that it was changed to life imprisonment in 1867 which in itself is a death sentence considering the harsh regime of Victorian Prisons. It broke Oscar Wilde's health after five years.

The rest of your rambling post is just vindictive nonsense

That's pretty funny. The Independent has a good article on where this conservative fuckwittery came from in Uganda, and funnily enough none of the participants were Muslims.

When you read that article it bears a striking resemblance to what Saudi Arabia's conservative religious groups are up to in Muslim countries across the Third World. Similar attitudes and aims in both cases.

Thanks for the examples Egbut. Somehow I was expecting more and more recently. I thought about my art teacher at high school who said in my report one year, "Has much to offer but does not often offer much". Alas, we have something in common.

Psyco, I didn't say a supposed Christian mired in a stew of Christianity, tribalism and voodoo (as is common in Africa) wouldn't do dumb stuff but that its not part of orthodox Christian teaching. Islam is mired in what many would see as the Old Testament world by design.

3:16...You just make things up as you go along using words you don't really understand.
Voodoo is a religion practised in a small area of Benin/Nigeria. If you forget all the Hollywood bullshit it is more benign and no less weird than Scientology with aliens living in a Volcano (thank you Mr Cruise)....so it is not common and there is nothing orthodox about Christian teachings in Africa particularly sub Sahara.

You actually know very little about religions or people.. do you? You just like creating discord between people and encouraged hate.

Maybe I know more about African Christianity than you think. Even Africans say its a mile wide and an inch deep as a reflection of the problems stemming from local shysters using it as the latest control mechanism over ignorant people. Yep, haters going to hate I guess. Next slogan please.

Adolf, please tell me more about this new religion you have discovered.

Meanwhile, I am about to gout and scoff several kilos of the best Spencer Gulf prawns, something that is forbidden both the Jew and the Gentile. How's that for controlling?

And a well deserved bout of gout it will be too.
